Jan Reset

I spent three weeks away over Christmas and New Year, visiting Chengdu, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, and Macau, before heading home to Malaysia to catch up with family and friends.

Back to British Reality

Returning to the UK in early January was harder than expected. The dark, cold, rainy days got to me more than usual, and I felt my mood dip. Work’s been quite demanding lately as well, but I’ll keep those thoughts separate from my blog.

Two Decades in the UK

I’ve now lived in the UK for 20 years. During this time, I’ve watched Asia change remarkably, particularly in technology. It makes me feel quietly proud of my Asian heritage. Someone asked me recently whether I’d still choose to move to the UK if I had the chance again. Honestly, if I were 20 today, probably not. Asia feels more convenient and efficient in many ways now.

Twenty years ago, though? I’d make the same choice without hesitation. Living in the UK has taught me valuable lessons about independence, self-acceptance, and resilience. I’ve grown through challenges and learned a lot about myself through meeting different people.

No Big Resolutions

I’ve never been one for “new year, new me” declarations. This year, my plan is straightforward: keep going, do my best, face challenges as they come, and try to enjoy the journey.

The Travel Bug Continues

I definitely want to keep exploring. China has particularly fascinated me – I first visited Beijing three years ago and have returned annually since, discovering different cities each time. The country feels incredibly modern, and despite speaking Chinese, I still found some of the technology there surprisingly challenging to navigate.

I’d also like to revisit certain places. Kyoto is high on that list – I’ve only been once, ten years ago, and I’d love to return.

Beyond Asia

Whilst I’ve focused on Asia recently (mainly because it’s convenient and I feel comfortable there), I’d like to explore other continents given the chance. South Africa and South America are both on my wish list.

Taking It Day by Day

This post doesn’t contain any concrete plans or particularly useful insights. I’m still working out what I want to achieve this year. Staying motivated can be difficult during these grey, sunless months. Looking after myself remains my main priority – without good health, nothing else really matters.

I hope you’ve had a good start to 2026, and thanks for reading.
